Welcome to Year 5
Teacher: Mr Keaney
Teaching Assistant: Mrs McGanity
Welcome to the Year 5 class page! Here you’ll find key information about what’s happening in our year group. Year 5 is an exciting year full of new learning and opportunities as the children continue to grow in confidence and independence. To help them get the very best out of their time in school, it’s important they attend every day and arrive on time, ready to learn. If your child is unwell, please let the school office know about their absence.
P.E
P.E. lessons will take place every Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure your child has a labelled P.E. kit bag in school. The kit should remain in school until the end of each half term, when it will be sent home to be washed.
The P.E. kit consists of:
- A blue P.E. t-shirt
- Black or blue shorts
- Black P.E. pumps
Reading
Reading is at the heart of learning and regular practice at home makes a big difference to children’s progress. We use Reading Plus, which can also be accessed for homework and children will bring home a reading book every Monday to be returned by Thursday. Please ensure that your child records their reading in their green journal and that it is signed each week. Working together in this way helps to build fluency, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.
Homework
Each week, children are expected to read regularly at home, both from their chosen reading book and through Reading Plus online. Our homework menu, which offers a range of creative and topic-based activities, is available on the school webpage for families to access and enjoy together.
Learning Journeys
Each term we have a Learning Journey, where you can see the topics we will be focusing on in each subject throughout the school year.
Class Information
Attendance
It is extremely important that your child attends school every day unless they are too sick to come in. If your child is going to be absent, please ring the school to let us know. We understand that during this time carers may be anxious about sending their child to school, however strict measures are in place to ensure safety, good hygiene and social distancing where possible.
Punctuality
Please make sure that your child arrives at school on time (8:45am). Lessons begin the minute your child sets foot in the classroom. Your child will enter through the Sports & Arts pedestrian gate.
Uniform
Please ensure your child has the correct uniform and has their name in everything including their coat and P.E Kit.
For P.E children should have a white T-Shirt, black or navy shorts, and black pumps. This half term, we have PE on Wednesdays and Fridays so please make sure your child has a kit. Children can wear their kit to school on PE days.
Reading Books
Reading books are changed regularly, therefore your child will bring a different reading book home. Please read with your child for a short period each night encouraging them to sound out unfamiliar words and read with fluency and expression. Please make a comment in your child’s reading record and return this with the reading book on the days stated. If the reading record is not signed the book will not be changed. There is a £3 charge for any lost or damaged reading books. You can find information on ways to support your child’s reading on our Reading section of this page.
Homework
Spellings will be taught weekly to the children and they can practice these through Spelling Shed. We will have Spelling Tests on Fridays.
We also have a Homework Menu that your child can use to choose a creative activity. This homework will be presented to the rest of the class every half term. Your child can also practice their times tables through using TimesTables Rock Stars and reading through Reading Eggs.
Water
Children are encouraged to drink regularly throughout the day and will have access to fresh water. To help reduce plastic pollution, please consider a refillable bottle instead of single -use.
Inhalers/Prescribed Medicine
If your child needs an inhaler, could you please send it in with a name label and instructions on when to take it. All parents must sign a medical consent form in the main Reception to authorise any medicines to be administered by staff.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. If you wish to speak to us at hometime please wait until all children have been picked up and we will be happy to help.
