Springtime in Nursery: Learning Through Play

As spring brings longer days and blossoming flowers, our Nursery classroom has come alive with energy, curiosity, and creativity. This term, we’ve been embracing the season with a rich variety of play-based learning experiences that support every area of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

At the heart of our provision is the belief that children learn best through play. Whether they’re building with blocks, role-playing in our home corner, or exploring nature in our outdoor area, every activity is carefully planned to develop communication, collaboration, problem-solving and confidence.

This term, our children have been fascinated by the signs of spring all around us. We’ve been planting seeds and learning how to care for living things, watching with excitement as our flowers begin to grow. Through this hands-on exploration, the children have developed their understanding of the world, while also learning patience and responsibility.

Our role-play areas have been transformed into everything from a flower shop to a picnic park, encouraging imaginative play and language development. It’s been wonderful to see children taking on different roles, negotiating with peers, and expressing their ideas with increasing confidence.

Outdoor play has also taken centre stage this term. The milder weather means we’re spending even more time in our garden – climbing, digging, balancing, and discovering mini beasts. These experiences are not only joyful but also crucial in developing gross motor skills, resilience, and teamwork.

In every corner of our Nursery, learning is happening all the time – often disguised as fun! Whether it’s counting out cups in the mud kitchen, creating patterns with spring-themed loose parts, or retelling favourite stories with puppets, play gives our children the freedom to explore, make mistakes, and grow.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our children are making, and we can’t wait to see how their learning continues to blossom throughout the rest of the term.
